In the first game in the new meadowlands stadium the Giants defeated the Jets 31-16.  The problem for the Giants is that the final score of the first preseason game is not always the most important measuring stick for a team’s performance.  In the first half the Giants starters were outhustled and outplayed by the Jets starters.  The Jets played a more physical game, they sustained longer drives, ran the ball effectively, stopped the Giants on the ground (Bradshaw and Jacobs netted only a yard on the ground), and even bloodied Eli Manning.  Manning’s first half injury was one of the scarier moments for Giants fans.  He had his helmet knocked off and cut his head on a Jets player’s facemask.  Manning received 12 stitches for the gash on his forehead, though he said after the game that he could have returned if the Giants needed him.

Top of the morning to you sports fans!

The sun has yet to rise in the east, but your favorite sports junkie is up early getting in his fix.  I have no idea why I am up at 5:00 in the morning on a Saturday, but I felt it was appropriate to share my insomnia with whoever else might be up at the crack of dawn.

My obsession with Pro Football Focus continues...

Cromartie only had 2 good games in 2009, with a total season ranking of -5.5. But that still wasn't bad enough to beat Tomlinson who had only 1 good game in 2009 and came in with a total season ranking of -10.8. Although Cromartie did play a little worse in the Chargers playoff loss, maybe that's why they signed him first? Wait, what?

What is Gary Wichard thinking? He is Jason Taylor’s agent and the person who convinced the 13-year veteran to head up to New York and talk to the Jets. Taylor, who is well known for his bitterness towards the Jets, has yet to be resigned by the Miami Dolphins but has made it known that he wants to stay with the team he has spent the majority of his career with. Miami’s General Manager, Jeffery Ireland, has said that the team won’t make a move to resign Taylor till after the upcoming draft.

With less than five hours before free agency begins, let me get a few thoughts out of my mind:

Be sure to sign the Leigh Bodden thank-you card. He’s not coming back. He’s the second-best corner back available in free agency after Houston’s Dunta Robinson. It shouldn’t take him long to find an offer that he can’t pass up. His gamble to sign a one year deal with a promise from the Patriots that they wouldn’t franchise him will pay off. He erased his years with Detroit, including the 0-16 season, from everyone’s mind. Wish you luck at your next career stop, Leigh, as long as it’s not with an AFC East team.

When Adalius Thomas went on the radio airwaves a couple weeks ago he shed just a little light on what exactly went wrong with him and the Patriots in 2009. Apparently it all started after the first game of the season, the home opener against the Buffalo Bills, which saw the Tom Brady pull of the greatest fourth quarter comeback of his career. Thomas said that Coach Belichick met with him after the game to express that his play was substandard and from there things went down hill fast.

It was an ugliest of games for the team in the prettiest of cities. After winning 11 straight games to finish the regular season, the San Diego Chargers came out with a resounding thud at home against the Jets on Sunday. We see how the tides of the NFL sweep.  The NY Giants, losers of 4 straight, win a big game vs. Atlanta, who fought hard to the end. After the game, Giants' coach Tom Coughlin said, "It's good to win a game."  While the New York Jets at 4-5, faced a virtually must win game against New England, in Foxboro, MA.  Getting a win there would be quite difficult. It didn't happen as New England took control as the Jets committed 5 turnovers.  Giving New England the ball 5 times isn't going to lead to a winning formula.  The Jets was fallen into the Meadowlands quagmire.  After a fast start at 3-0, the Jets have lost 6 games and won 1.  That's not winning football and the Jets fans are none too happy about it.  But you have a rookie QB in Mark Sanchez and while he is smart and has talent, he faces some of the top defensive coaches and teams in the league, especially the Patriots, who took the team apart.  A radio analyst on the Jets network said of the game, "This is what happens when you don't execute."

Monday Morning Moneyball: Week 2- Big Apple Stars Are Born!

Welcome to Monday Morning Moneyball! Week 2 provided us with two New York tales of triumph that not only bucked old trends, but also may have unveiled the dawn of a new quarterback era in green and wide receiver tandem in blue. We start with the J-E-T-S, JETS JETS JETS! All week, media outlets all over the country have been replaying Rex Ryan’s message to the Jets season ticket holders. 70 seconds of fanfare and propaganda from Ryan begged for support over and beyond the norm from the Jets faithful, and his message was reiterated by Kerry Rhodes and several other Jets players, and the message was simple: We can beat the Patriots. That they did, 16-9, showing off their Baltimore style dominant defense that Ryan has brought over from the Raven dynasty. While I’ll delve into New England’s deficiencies in my Money Bites below, praise needs to be given to Mark Sanchez for his 2nd consecutive strong performance. While his numbers weren’t gaudy (14 of 22, 163 yards with 1 TD, 0 Int), his 101.1 passer rating is indicative of his efficient performance. Sanchez did everything Ryan and the Jets could ask of him in his rookie season. He stayed away from risky unnecessary throws, threw for a 65% completion percentage in the second half and executed on big plays down the stretch, including the go-ahead touchdown strike to Dustin Keller. Watch out young QB society, Tom Brady, and everyone else in the AFC, if Sanchez keeps up this act, the Jets will be a team to be reckoned with come January.

I'm not going to pretend I saw the writing on the wall before Richard Seymour was sent to Oakland just before the regular season began. But the apparent fact is that the New England Patriots are a different team than the one that won three out of four Super Bowls in the first half of the decade, or even the ones that came within a half of playing the Bears in Super Bowl 41, or went 16-0 only to lose in the final moments of Super Bowl 43.

The Jets what happens when a team gets pressure all game long instead of just at the end of the game. I picked LB Gary Guyton to have a breakout year just before the season started. Now he has no excuse.

Already pegged as a starter in his second year, now he’s the focal point of the defense with MLB Jerod Mayo out for six to eight weeks with a sprained MCL. I was having a debate with a friend of mine about the best player of different NFL teams. It was agreed on big names like Aikman and Smith for the Cowboys or Jim Brown for Cleveland but when it came t

Plaxico Burress has avoided a decision in the justice system, for now, but will a decision on his playing future soon be reached? Burress and his agent Drew Rosenhaus have stated that he is in good shape and ready to play in the NFL this coming season after recovering from his self inflicted gun shot wound last fall. With jail time on the back burner for now, Burress seems free to rejoin an NFL team and resume his career, but does anyone want to sign him? More importantly, should anyone sign him?

Over the last two years America has slowly sunk into an economic mess. People are losing their jobs, their homes, and their self-esteem as they find it harder and harder to make ends meet. It appears however that not everybody is suffering. As college educated people lose jobs they've held for years, and recent college graduates struggle to find any job at all, there are some signing on the dotted line for millions that haven't earned a dime of what they are being given. America's two largest, and most arguably most popular, professional sports leagues are doing nothing to curtail ballooning salaries for top rated rookies who haven't even set foot on the field to prove they are worthy of a contract.

It's still only June, not even five months since Rex Ryan was hired as the newest head coach of the New York Jets, and he's already been stirring up drama in the AFC East.

First came Bart Scott, the Inside Linebacker Ryan brought with him from Baltimore, proclaiming the Jets to have a  new "swagger-licious" attitude. Practices were now fun and vocal, a swift departure from how things were run under Eric Mangini. After just a few OTA practices, the Jets already had a new confidence under Ryan.

Today wasn’t anything particularly special.  I woke up at 8:00a.m., a full hour after my alarm went off, not awesome.  Turned on the TV to see more Brett Favre.  His face, his grizzle and red jersey.  It seems that all the footage of Brett playing in Packer colors has been wiped off the face of the earth.

Brett Favre where do we begin.  This is an open letter to you and all of your concerns.  Stop you incessant pursuit to dominate your old team.  It isn’t likable, pretty or even expected that a man of caliber would stoop to such depths.  No playing campaign with the Minnesota Vikings will validate your 16 year career with the Green Bay Packers.  Unless you join the Vikings and go undefeated for the next two seasons, the Packers are never going to believe they made the wrong decision.

It would be easy to say that Tom Brady going down in Week One was the defining moment of the 2008 New England Patriots.

Sure, in many ways it was, but with Brady going down just twelve minutes into 2008 there was still a full season of football to be played. So, ultimately the 2008 Patriots were not defined by a lack of Tom Brady, they were defined by not being able to beat any of the elite teams they faced.

Jason Taylor Doesn't Want to Play for the Jets? The Jets Don't Want or Need Taylor!

Free agent defensive end Jason Taylor told a reporter last week that he would like to return to Miami to play for the Dolphins this upcoming season and he likely would not even consider signing a contract with the New York Jets.

Well, the first wave of free agency has passed, and the Browns didn't jump in. It appears to me that the Browns don't have a lot of room under the cap to sign high-priced free agents.

Leaving: Kellen Winslow, Joe Jurevicius, Jason Wright, Audra Davis. Is Braylon Edwards next? Next year is a contract year, and it appears that Braylon doesn't want to sign with the Browns again. So, why keep him around when we could get something for him this year? I know...we don't have a lot of quality WRs on the roster. But, if we rely on Braylon's potential, we might as well trade him for draft picks. And if I remember correctly, Braylon couldn't even catch a cold last season. Is Donte Stallworth leaving? After his accident, no one knows his future. Lastly, many experts believe that one of the QBs will be traded. Well, stay tuned.

Shaq and Kobe “Had a Good Time” with Each Other

Another week has come and gone, and there is another Sunday crossword to make me feel like college was a waste of money and another week of sports in our memory banks. From the aftermath of Alex Rodriguez’ steroid scandal to a NBA player looking like the lovechild of a Georgetown basketball coach and a patriotic Muppet, there’s much to talk about and a whole lot more on my mind.

Well, we got a coach--Todd Haley. Did you know that he is the son of Dick Haley, long-time Pittsburgh Steelers personnel director? Dick Haley was personnel director from 1975 to 1990, I think. Now, that is some impressive pedigree...Todd also worked as receivers coach and passing coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys when Bill Parcells was head coach. He was also receivers coach for the New York Jets in the late 90s when they went from 1-15 in 1996 to 12-4 two years later. In other words, this guy is a winner, and he has impressive credentials. He was not hired just because of his success the last 2 years with the Arizona Cardinals. I am encouraged by the hiring.

The New York Jets hired former Baltimore Ravens Defensive Coordinator Rex Ryan Monday to a four-year contract worth a reported $11.6 million to become the ninth "HC of the NYJ" since the start of the 1990 season. Ryan, 46, who received a glowing endorsement from coaching icon Bill Parcells, was hired to lead the NFL's equivalent of bastard, red-headed children one day after the Ravens were eliminated by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC Championship game. "King Rex," the son of legendary and equally notorious defensive mastermind Buddy Ryan who revolution the NFL with his “46” package, arrived in the swamps of Jersey and boldly predicted that Gang Green would be leaving East Rutherford in the near future for a trip to Washington D.C. to be congratulated by President Barack Obama on the teams first Super Bowl win since Neil Armstrong walked on the moon in 1969.

Obviously, going from an abysmal 1-15 to 11-6 and AFC East Champions was quite the storybook turnaround. But, it wasn't enough, and the team still has a long way to go before it can compete with the AFC powerhouses like the Steelers and the Ravens.

When talk began to surface in 2006 that Eric Mangini would be using the 3-4 defense as the new head coach of the New York Jets, I hated it. I knew the personal on the team would not fit the system. The 2004 Jets had a league rated #7 defense, however the 2005 team was plagued by injuries. 2006 onwards saw the decline of playmakers like Jonathon Vilma, Dwayne Robertson and Sean Ellis with the move to the 3-4. The team finished 10-6 under Mangini's first year, but since than have failed to make the playoffs.

According to reports, the Patriots plan to franchise QB Matt Cassel. Doing so wouldn't surprise me because it gives New England leverage.

Naturally the pessimists jumped to the conclusion that something is wrong with QB Tom Brady's recovery from his knee surgeries. A report said because of the infection, it sets Brady back to the point he might miss the 2009 season. If that's the case, then slapping a franchise tag on Cassel is insurance if Brady can't return for '09.

This past Sunday, the Dallas Cowboys traveled to Lincoln Financial Field to play the Philadelphia Eagles in what was a win and you’re in the playoffs game.  This game had a lot of build-up prior kick-off.  The Eagles found out, about 15 minutes before the game started, that the stars had aligned for them; the Bears and Buccaneers had both lost.  This game had everything football fans wanted.  It was the ‘Boys against the Birds, with their playoff destinies on the line.
